David is famous not only for his football exploits, but also for his high-profile marriage to ex-Spice Girl Victoria (Adams) Beckham.
David was born in Leytonstone, London, England to Sandra Georgina and David "Ted" Beckham. His father was a kitchen fitter, and young David always wanted to be a footballer.
David Beckham is self-described as being half-Jewish. He attended church every week as a child because it had a football team and he had to attend in order to play. When teachers asked what he wanted to be when he grew he, he would reply, "A footballer." While that was uncannily prescient... he also could have said "male model" and been just as right.
I've probably had more contact with Judaism than with any other religion... I used to wear the traditional Jewish skullcaps when I was younger, and I also went along to some Jewish weddings with my grandfather.
David Beckham's family was very devoted to the Manchester United football team, attending many games. David made them all proud by signing a contract with them on his 14th birthday.
David Beckham practiced hard, enough even to impress his legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson. He wore numbers 10 and 7 throughout much of his career, the 7 being particularly iconic in the world of United football.
Perhaps David's most famous goal was on August 17, 1996, when, in a game against Wimbledon, he arced in a shot from the halfway line. He usually played as a midfielder, though he played other positions as well. He made the England squad for Euro 96.
Around the time of his getting married to Victoria Adams of the Spice Girls in 2007, David's focus on his football playing began to wander, according to his manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He led United to several league titles, and also played on loan for Spanish champions Real Madrid.
David eventually moved to Los Angeles to play for the American soccer team the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. Despite some catty statements by Real Madrid that he was unwanted there, the club did use his services in some subsequent events.
Despite all the naysayers, Beckham continued to play at a very high level after leaving Madrid and scored many key goals during that period. His time with the Galaxy greatly helped that club's finances.
Hollywood was calling more and more, and David and wife Victoria bought a $18.2 million home on San Ysidro Drive in Beverly Hills. The Beckhams quickly settled in as one of the to power couples in Los Angeles.
The Beckhams are friends with Tom Cruise and Jay Leno, and they also own a home in Dubai. David models and acts, and is widely considered one of the top male models in the world. He also is among the most searched topics of the 2000s.
According to Time Magazine, in 2006, David Beckham sought a little extra protection for his physique. The £100 million insurance (then around $195 million) deal covering his entire body — widely considered the largest personal policy in sports history — and was so large it was rumored to have been split among several reinsurers.
Whoever insured Beckham definitely took a risk, considering any part of the body may get injured during a soccer game or even while driving a vehicle or bicycle. A fractured tibula or fibula, a broken collarbone, or even his muscle turning into body fat may be covered under his policy.
While he is most famous for his football skills, David Beckham has transferred nicely to the world of fashion and film. He has a rugged look that will only be better with time. One can well see his career extending into the future far outside the confines of football.
While most American men and many American women may not have heard of him, or at the very least are not familiar with his legendary football career, many, many women and men around the world know all about David Beckham. He wears leather, as everything else, with rare style and grace.
David Beckham has around 40 million followers of his Instagram page. For those of you unfamiliar with social media (yes, some folks still are) - that's a lot of followers.

David Beckham was the title character of cult hit "Bend It Like Beckham" (2002), but, despite being physically able to appear in it himself, director Gurinder Chadha could not schedule an appearance by the star footballer. Lookalike Andy Harmer played David instead (except in real archive footage).

I think the most important goal I scored in Spain was the first one because people were wary about me coming over to Spain as a player - they thought I was just there to sell shirts.
