Rita Ora, "Hot Right Now" Girl
Rita Sahatçiu Ora (born 26 November 1990) is an Albanian-born British singer-songwriter and actress. She has become a fixture on United Kingdom musical competition shows such as The Voice UK and The X Factor.
Rita is from Pristina, Yugoslavia, a region that since has become Kosovo. She has a younger brother and older sister. The "Ora" was an invention by her parents to make their family name easier to pronounce. They are ethnic Albanians.
The Oras moved from Yugoslavia to London, England in 1991 to avoid the conflict wracking the region. They settled in West London, and Rita, who displayed a talent for singing, went to performing arts school Sylvia Young Theatre School.
Rita's father owned a pub, so she began singing there and at open mic nights around town. Around 2007, she managed to get some backup work on some tracks by Craig David, James Morrison and Tinchy Stryder.
Like many aspiring European singers before her, Rita auditioned to represent her country in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, after much thought, she withdrew from the competition - there is a strong theory of opinion that participation in the Eurovision competition actually can hinder a solo artist's career, though of course it has done wonders for facts such as ABBA.
In December 2008, Rita got a deal with US label Roc Nation. This got her more backup work on efforts by Jay Z and Drake. She began recording material, gradually building up a catalogue of songs for an eventual album release.
Rita's big break came in February 2012, when a single she had worked on with DJ Fresh, "Hot Right Now," debuted at No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. Rita now had her foot in the door of fame and fortune.
Rita capitalized on the exposure by releasing her own single, "R.I.P." in May 2012. This also debuted at the top of the UK Singles Chart. A follow-up single, "How We Do (Party)" also hit No. 1 in August 2012. Just like that, Rita Ora was a household name.
In 2012, Ora released her debut album, Ora, which included her two number-one singles. Rita Ora became the artist with the most number-one singles on the UK Singles Chart in 2012.
Rita's success continued. She had another top ten single, "Shine Ya Light," in November 2012. She went on tour in early 2013 to promote her tour on the "Radioactive Tour." She received three awards at the 2013 Brit Awards.
Rita then sought to get out of her contract with Roc Nation, claiming that the label was stifling her creativity by not releasing a second album. The parties settled in May 2016, and Rita later signed with Atlantic Records. As of this writing, she has yet to release her follow-up album, though it is expected shortly.
Rita is not too well known in the States, but the top names in the business sure know who she is. She has started to get some American tv and film appearances, such as on television show "90210," "Fast and Furious 6" (2013), and "Fifty Shades of Grey" (2015). She continues to perform the role of Mia Grey in follow-up films "Fifty Shades Darker" (2017) and "Fifty Shades Freed" (2018).
In 2013, Ora became the new face of the "Material Girl Collection," a clothing line sold in Macy's and designed by Madonna and her daughter Lola. She has deep ties to the fashion industry, as shown by her eclectic leather stylings.
Rita is best known among her British fans for being a fixture on musical competition shows. She replaced Kelly Rowland on "The X Factor," and also hosted the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards in 2013 and 2014. In 2015, she moved over to "The Voice UK" on BBC One, and she also returned to the X Factor. In 2016, Rita replaced Tyra Banks as the host of "America's Next Top Model." She also appears regularly on other shows, such as "Extra," and is the host of "Boy Band." She is all over television, on award shows and chat shows and the like.
Rita is legendary in her home country of Kosovo, and was named an honorary ambassador by the country's president in July 2015. Rita said that she was "overwhelmed" by the honor.
Rita has worked with UNICEF and several other charities, such as Band Aid 30. She helped raise money for Cancer Research UK, and performed for the Princess Grace Foundation.
I was signed at 18 and had to grow up quickly.
I don't get jealous - I get suspicious.
If I'm not working and getting my makeup done, that's my chance to do a hair mask and a face mask and my plucking and waxing and all of that.
Clothes are fun. The designers have so much fun making them, you should have fun wearing them, too.
Know yourself; keep your circle tight. Keep your friends and your work circle tight.
I walked into this industry blond with red lips, and I will leave this industry blond with red lips. Mark my words.
I've always been into looking different.
When it comes down to the music, it's just you and the microphone. It's not you and the record execs.
I don't know what it feels like not to have a great family support system - I was lucky to have that.
I don't really have that many judgements on things, or crazy statements that I feel like I have to put across.
